El flamenco es sin duda uno de los animales más populares de la zona, su atractivo es invaluable, sin embargo, no es la única ave especial que ronda el desierto de Atacama. Un buen ejemplo es el Pequén o lechuza.

Aunque la podemos ver en Chile en zonas costeras desde la Iº Región hasta Valdivia, también le gusta habitar terrenos abiertos y poco vegetados de la precordillera superando alturas sobre los 2.000 metros del mar. Se caracteriza por ser de color café con manchas blancas, ojos amarillos y un pico corto. Mide apróximadamente 26 cms.

En general es fácil verla, ya que a diferencia de otras variedades de búhos, esta lechuza es la menos nocturna saliendo tanto de día como de noche. Su ubicación es cómoda, se posa sobre un montículo o poste desde donde observa tranquilamente en busca de algún roedor pequeño o escarabajo para alimentarse. Y no hay nada que se le escape a la vista, ¡puede girar su cabeza en 360º!

But well, let us see what happens in every season of the year:

Summer, Decembre 22 to March 21 – 16ºC min y 27ºC max.
Autumn, March 22 to June 22 – 8ºC min y 24º max.
Winter, June 22 to September 21 – 4º miny 22º max.
Spring, September 22 ti December 21 – 8º min y 25º max.

The abrupt temperature changes is the only thing you will have o worry about. Rains are light and ocassional only during the Altiplanic Winter from January to March. The rest of the year you will have assured a bright blue sunny sky during all your stay.

Though without matter of the time of the year you travel to San Pedro, there are some things you always have to bring with you:

Antes de partir a un viaje es importante informarse de cómo es el lugar al que se irá, qué temperaturas encontrarás y qué necesitas llevar. En este caso hay que empezar por el dato más importante y obvio a esta altura: San Pedro de Atacama es un pueblo en medio de un desierto por lo tanto es fundamental llevar ropa fresca para el día y abrigada para la noche debido a la oscilación térmica.

Pero bien, repasemos lo que pasa en cada estación del año:

Verano, 22 de Diciembre al 21 de Marzo – 16ºC mínimo y 27ºC máximo.
Otoño, 22 de Marzo al 21 de Junio – 8ºC mínimo y 24º máximo.
Invierno, 22 de Junio al 21 de Septiembre – 4º mínimo y 22º máximo.
Primavera, 22 de Septiembre al 21 de Diciembre – 8º mínimo y 25º máximo.

Los bruscos cambios de temperatura es de lo único que deberá preocuparse. Las lluvias son leves y ocasionales durante el Invierno Altiplánico que es de Enero a Marzo. El resto del año tendrá asegurado un cielo azul despejado durante toda su estadía.

Aunque sin importar la época en que se viaje a San Pedro siempre hay que llevar la siguiente ropa:

- Ropa térmica
- Parka
- Shorts
- Traje de baño
- Zapatillas para caminar
- Zapatillas de Trekking
- Anteojos de sol
- Protector Solar
- Guantes
- Gorro
