Festivity of the Virgen de Candelaria
In Atacama the most important celebrations of the people have their roots in religious festivals. They are a blend of ancient rituals and beliefs that brought the Spanish. This is a clear example.
The feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria, one of the most ancient advocations of Virgin Mary, was originally called in the East of the “Meeting”, then in the sixth century spread to the West coming to be held in Rome and other parts of the world as Atacama.
Although the festivity receives many different names depending on where it takes place, all match the same date of event: February 2. Other names given are the Presentation of the Lord, the Purification of Mary, the Feast of Lights and the Feast of the Candles. Somehow all these point to the significance of the festival. Christ the Light of the world introduced by his mother in the Temple comes to enlighten all as the candle, whence is derived the name “Candelaria”.
The Virgin is venerated in Tenerife, place to have had her appearance around the year 1400, thus became the patron saint of the Canary Islands as well as many regions of Spain and some cities in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, Peru and the Andean Altiplano towns.
In San Pedro it is held between 31 January and 3 February in the town of Caspana.
