Like skating and snowboarding, sandboarding was created by surfers who were unable to enter the sea due to lack of waves, so they searched new possibilities for sliding and gliding. It is an extreme sport and relatively new, it consists of sliding down dunes or sand hills. It´s originally from Florianopolis, Brazil and was born there in the 80´s. Today it has won fans worldwide.
The equipment consists of a board, similar to a snowboard, with two “handles”, where both feet are strapped to the surface to maneuver more easily without losing control.
In Chile there are 3 highly recommended places: Dunes Cerro Dragon in Iquique, Region I, the dunes of Concon, Region V and the spectacular dunes of Death Valley in San Pedro de Atacama!
This spot in particular, in the middle of the cordillera de la sal, only 4 kilometers from the town of San Pedro, is distinguished by its reddish eroded forms. The high aridity and salty environment make it impossible for the existence of life, which is how it gets its name.
Climb the dune, sit down and appreciate the amazing scenery and then descend full speed down the dune. This is an experience that you cant stop living in your journey through San Pedro, there is no age limit to practice sandboarding, you only need the will for thrill! and energy to climb the dunes. You can rent boards in town. Without doubt a gorgeous outlook for an unforgettable sunset!
