Morro Moreno: A mist oasis
Morro Moreno is the name given to a park near the beach Juan Lopez close to Antofagasta. Property of the Air Force of Chile, this hill is one of the six mist oasis in Chile, this means that it receives moisture from the sea. It is about 1,000 meters above sea level and is noted for a variety of flora and fauna, including some types of cactus and flowers that are unique in the region.
Within the vegetation species that can be found are Eulychnia, Copiapoa, Eriosyce, Echinopsis, Heliotropium, Ephedra, Lycium, Cynanchum, Viola, Argythamnia, Nolana, Tetragonia, all with valuable chemical compounds used to treat diseases.
In terms of fauna, the coastal sector of the hill is inhabited by a number of sea lions, and otters, although these last ones show themselves less.
It is important to mention the arqueological relevance of the site, in which you can find rests of the antique fishermen called changos, and also paleontological tracks.
An important news for its preservation is that now it will become part of the National System of Protected Areas of the State.
Just a couple hours away from San Pedro, this park deserves a visit.
