The most comfortable way to arrive in San Pedro, is certainly by plane to Calama and then in one of the hotel vans to the hotel. For all this journey, you will probably fly  Lan Chile, the biggest chilean airline at the moment. In general one can look up the tickets on the internet and get the whole trip sorted in one go, all the way to Calama and back.

Above all, do not stay in Calama, it is Chile´s biggest mininig company and the place where most of the money is made for the country. From Calama the economy is maintained stable these days, but the place itself is not particularly beautiful or safe.

For all these reasons, the best part is that, upon your arrival, somebody from the hotel will be there to greet you, take your luggage and direct you smoothly to the hotel itself. If you can choose, please get there in the evening, so you have the full blessing of the sunset in the desert and arrive at the hotel in the dark, so you can enjoy the next day with the awe of a child, as the place reveals itself in full daylight.

La manera más cómoda de llegar hasta San Pedro de Atacama es en avión hasta Calama y luego en uno de los vans del hotel. Lo más común es tomar un vuelo de Lan Chile, la línea aérea más grande de Chile en estos momentos. En general uno puede buscar en internet pasajes, tanto desde Santiago a Calama y regreso, o desde el país de origen, incluido Calama en el vuelo.

Por sobre todo, no se hospede en Calama, es la ciudad minera más importante del país y desde ella se generan las riquezas que mantienen la economía tan estable de Chile en estos días, pero el lugar mismo no es particularmente bello ni seguro.

La maravilla es que habrá alguien del hotel, con su nombre en la mano, para darle la cordial bienvenida, tomar su equipaje y conducirlo suavemente, en un cómodo van, hasta el hotel. Si puede escoger, intente llegar en la tarde, para ver la puesta de sol en el desierto, arribar al hotel en la  oscuridad y disfrutar como un niño, cuando a la mañana siguiente, el lugar le sea revelado.

“4 Deserts” is an international ultramarathon contest organized by a north american company called “Racing the Planet”. It is one of the most demanding races in the world and takes place in some of the most inhospitable corners of Earth. The first part of this year´s challenge happened in the Atacama Desert, in the North of Chile.

Each one of the contests- true ultra marathons that make this great event happen, lasts 7 days in which 250 kilómetros are covered at temperatures and conditions as  extreme as 50ºC bellow cero, sometimes 40ºC  bellow cero.

Ana as if this wasn´t enough, the help is minimum, the athletes must cater for themselves, take all their gear with them and food, cook for themselves and only be provided with water and a tent to sleep in at night.

The two great races are: 4 Deserts and Racing the Planet, both have quickly become some of the most quickly growing and renowned outdoor events on Earth. “4 deserts” is a series of four races on foot in cold places, hot, dryl, windy or frozen.  They go over Atacama in Chile, Gobi in China,  Sahara in Egypt, and Antartica.  “Racing the Planet” on the other hand,  is run in a different country each year, last year the runners went trough Vietnam, this year Namibia.

“4 Deserts” es una competencia internacional de ultramaratón organizada por la compañía estadounidense “Racing the Planet”. Se trata de una de las carreras más exigentes del mundo que se desarrolla en los lugares más inhóspitos del planeta. La primera etapa se realizó en el desierto de Atacama en Chile.

Cada una de las competencias -verdaderas ultramaratones que componen este gran evento, tienen una duración de siete días en los que se recorren 250 kilómetros en temperaturas y condiciones extremas, a veces a 50ºC sobre cero, a veces a 40ºC bajo cero. Y como si esto fuera poco, la ayuda es mínima, los corredores tienen que valérselas por sus propios medios, deben llevar todo su alimento y equipo, y cocinarse cada una de sus comidas. Sólo son proveídos de agua cada día y un lugar en una tienda para dormir en la noche.

Las dos grandes carreras son: 4 Desiertos (4 Deserts) y Carrera por el Planeta (Racing the planet)Ambas se han convertido rápidamente en dos de los eventos outdoors más populares y renombrados en el mundo. “4 deserts” es una serie de cuatro carreras a pie que se lleva a cabo en los lugares más fríos, calientes, ventosos y secos sobre la tierra. Las carreras se realizan en el desierto de Atacama en Chile, en el de Gobi en China, en el Sahara en Egipto y en la Antártica. Por otro lado está la carrera “Racing the Planet”, que se lleva a cabo cada año en un nuevo país. Recientemente se realizó en Vietnam y el 2009 se agregó Namibia.
