A group of English friends were on their way to San Pedro and if we hadn´t ran into them, they would have only taken their bikini! So we decided to let you all know, before you travel, about the clothes you should bring with you to Atacama. Just keep in mind that a desert has temperatures that go from minus degrees celcius to alot of heat.
On a hot day there may be a cool breeze keeping you fresh, and even though the sun is always warming, what you really have to deal with is the radiation, the rays are strong in the desert, so wear good sunscrean, hopefuly biodegradable, so you care for the water when you swim in the rivers and lakes of the area. So, a list of he basic stuff to take, will include a bathing suit and a wolly hat! Take shorts and sun glasess for the day and good warm jackets for the evening, as well as trousers and outdoor shoes. You might want to consider a slightly elegant piece, to have a candlelight dinner in town…
If you feel like a little shopping, then anything you are missing, plus all the stuff you didn´t know about! can be found in San Pedro town. Warm wolly sweaters and scarves, hats and gloves, basic outdoor equipment and cotton shirts. At the hotel, you can also top up with altiplanic goods, ranging from tapestry to alpaca, ponchos and sports t-shirts.
The important thing is to understand that you are not lost in the middle of nowhere and you will find what you need in the area. Just be ready for the climate and enjoy your freedom to match bikinies and wolly hats if needed!
